In Fahrenheit 451 Ray Bradbury made a pretty good case for why reading and being educated is important. In the quote above, Robin William's character in Dead Poet Society argues that we are a combination of fact and fiction, and both hold their own truths.
Now that we have established purpose in reading, let's go back to The Beginning of our written record. Ancient Lit shows us the order and value of our existence beyond our modern mechanical scientific understandings. Ancient man could see a grand order in the universe without science, and the early creation myths speak on these ideas of our origins and purpose masterfully and artistically. In 7-10 sentences: 1. Defend or argue the ideas above. What are your ideas about our value, purpose, origins, and how we make sense of our existence? 2. Explain the purpose of studying both myth and science. How are they both valuable to understanding human history? 3. What might be a reason for studying ancient literature? Make 3 predictions as to why such old stuff could POSSIBLY be important or relevant today. |
