"Ask yourself, What do we want in this country, above all? People want to be happy, isn’t that right? Haven’t you heard it all your life? I want to be happy, people say. Well, aren’t they? Don’t we keep them moving, don’t we give them fun? That’s all we live for, isn’t it? For pleasure, for titillation? And you must admit our culture provides plenty of these” (63).
Are you happy by nature? When you're most like yourself, what do your guts look like? Are they dark and cold like Mildred, or is your blood sparking around anticipating change like Montage, are you calm and steady and curious like Clarisse? Are you happy with life? Own. it. Please write 7-10 sentences. Consider taking the happiness quiz for fun first. Ray Bradbury is quoted for the following:
"After all, a computer is a book, and a long-playing record is a book--they just have different shapes. It doesn't matter where you get your knowledge, as long as you get it. You can get it from a wonderful motion picture, you can get it from a book of poetry, and you can get it from all the great audio discs and tapes that are being made. Those are all books, and people shouldn't mistake the shape." Do you agree with what Bradbury has to say about books and knowledge? Argue for or against his position, referencing specific pieces of the quote in your writing. You are now taking a virtual class--was Bradbury a fortune teller? ;) Try and think of all the books you've read throughout your life. Remember when reading was fun? But what kind of reading do you like to do outside of "books"? Is digital media making books obsolete? If all reading is knowledge, how is every piece of reading like a book? Respond with your thoughts in 7-10+ sentences. |
