We value literature for its truth and beauty. Should teenagers be required to read certain texts, or should they be allowed to choose what they read in school? Write a brief 2 paragraph persuasive essay, convincing the educational institution of your needs as a student. Use specific reasons and examples.

I believe that students should choose what they want to read. Not all students like to read the books that are assigned to us to read for an assignment. Some students like to read certain types of books and won't read any other book unless the topic is on what they like to read about. We should be allowed to read what we want not what they want us to. We aren't going to pay attention to the book if we don't have any interest in it so why not just let us read what we want.

I think both should be allowed. The certain books that are supposed to read help you learn about something specific. The knowledge that you learned could be applied on other areas. They would learn different kinds of stuff.

As a bookworm myself, I will always support students reading whole books rather than cherry-picked content. Without someone to tell us the straight truth, we will never know how to live. Just look at all the people in the world of "Fahrenheit 451." We would be mindless zombies with white noise in our ear and cold mechanical robots doing the easiest of tasks.

Students should definitely be given the right to choose what they read. For the majority of students, reading is already unappealing as it is. When you restrict reading to these required books you only make it worse. There are so many books out there that are much more interesting. I get it that these books are seen as classics and works of art by the education system and I'm fine with that. Have your opinion. However the lack of new additions to the stories we are forced to read is just due to laziness on their part. So we should be given a choice to explore worlds between new, undiscovered pages and not ones beaten to death over continuous years.

Students should absolutely be given the right of choice when reading. I, myself find reading very boring and dull, as well as a majority of kids do. When reading is not an option, kids may oppose the chosen text or enjoy it. Its a chance kids have to take today. I'm not the type of person to enjoy books unless they really appeal to me in a special way.

I feel like students should be allowed to read what they enjoy. If students read what they like, it would make them like reading more. I think that many people do not like to read because they are given some thing that doesn't amuse them. If they are given something that is boring to them, they won't pay attention to the book, which leads to them missing certain information.

Reading is a very important skill. The knowledge from books help improve imagination and concentration. Students that find the book their reading uninteresting wont do so well in class. They might act out or just not pay attention in genral because the book put them off. A student not feeling connected to the book should not affecte their grade. If they were to chose their own books this would not be a problem.

I think that teenagers should be given the option to read what they want. I belive this because of this day and age the majority dont like reading so if you force them to read something that they dont enojy the odds are they wont want to read at all.

I believe that teenagers should be given the freedom to read whatever they want to read. I believe this because everyone is different, not everyone wants to read the same thing. Everyone has different interests, one person may find a book like Fahrenheit 451 interesting, but another may hate it.

As I reader I would like to choose what I read , so yes I agree that teenagers should be allowed to choose what they read. People are different so some like to pick what they want to read and others don't and for those that do, I think they should be able to choose.

From my point of view, I believe that students should absolutely be given the option to choose what they want to read. I support my idea because I think that everyone is different and we all have different preferences. If you are given the freedom to read the book you want, you will probably end up liking the reading which will lead to reading more books.

I believe students should be able to choose what they are reading. Regardless of what it is,if you can relate to a students reading,it shows what they read has importante. It also creates a level of independence for that student. Besides, you can’t get mad at a student for reading.

I believe that students should both read certain texts but at the same time read what they want to read. If you read certain texts that might help you learn new stuff or help you get work done. If you read what you choose you can learn way more and collect way more knowledge, might even learn some new words or phrases.

The school system should allow students to choose what they want to read. The books we read aren’t challenging enough. Most teen grammar isn’t of the grade requirement reading helps expand your vocabulary. If I had the choice to read whatever book I wanted I would pick something of my interest.

I believe that we should get to choose what we read so it can interest us more. Many books that we are required to read are really boring and it’s hard to pay attention to something you don’t find interesting. I feel like the more we enjoy about the topic the better we learn. I understand why they choose books for us to read because I’ve notice that a lot of the books that we are required to read include a lot of logical fallacies and POS and many other things that we learn in our English class which helps us get a better understanding of the book.

I think that students should be able to choose whatever they want to read. The reason why i say this is because if you just give the student a book that doesn't catch them and bring there attention then they won't read it.The students should choose what they want to read regardless on what it is or what it's about. If they want to read it then they should be able to.

I think that students should still have to read literature. The reason I think that is because it teaches us lessons from the past.. what I mean by that is it shows us things that people have gotten into and shows us how to get out of them. Like the epic poem “the Odysseus” shows us that a man is capable of anything and everything. It shows what work ethic really is and what life can be.

I believe that students should get to choose what they read. If students are forced to read a specific book then they wont want to read the book . With the choice of what book you read the reader will be more interested in the book. I feel that if your forced to read something you wont be interested and that tends to make kids not pay attention to the story. There is an exception , if the kid isn’t reading anything then that person should be forced to read whatever the teacher chooses. But if the student reads the book of there choice they shouldn’t be forced as well.

i think that student shouldn't pick what they get to read in school. students wouldn't know what to pick. they would just pick the shortest book or the one that looks the coolest. teachers should just keep it how it is now and keep us doing the work that we have to do. only teachers should pick what we get to read as they went to school for that. help us understand the reading and apply it to our work.

Most students would choose easy or books that they shouldn't be reading. They should be able to read most text unless it is not a word they would normally say. If the word is raciest or just out of context then they might be able to skip the word. They will only be able to read the word if it is allowed other than that they should skip the word.

I would say both that way the teachers teach them what they going to use in life. There are specific things teachers need to teach for students to graduate or for the things they going use it in life later on. Most of the stuff the teachers should teach because they might need it for there future job/or career. Most of it they going to use it if life later on.

I am the type of student that does not like to read. I think that if I was able to choose what book(s) to read, I would be more inclined to try to read the book(s). I find that when I’m forced to read books that don’t appeal to me I loose interest quickly.

i think that students should be able to choose what they want to read. many students, including myself, can get easily distracted and bored if the are not reading a book that they are genuinely interested in. if a student is assigned to read a book that they care less about then that effort that they put into an assignment is going to be reflected on how they like the book which is not to good.

I think that students should be able to choose what they want to read. I don't think it is fair to force a student to read a book just because it is required. And i think that students should have the right to read anything and not just certain things that school doesn't want you to read.

I think in certain situations kids should be able to choose their own book to read or at least have a couple of books to choose from given to them. When it comes to serious topics about history or anything in general teachers should probably choose the book for us because people like to joke around about situations trying to be funny.

I believe as a student that we should get to choose what we read not many people are interested in the same. Another thing is it depends to what we read and if we could or can’t handle gritty material. And other time we wont understand what’s going on if the material is too complex. Some students prefer horror. But it’s not just about the horror genre. Books are often banned for teens because of vaguely “adult” subject matter.I think it just depends what on what you read and you could handle it.

I think that it should be balanced, so students can read about friendship and learn how the world works, but students should take the time to read something they find interest in so the have this sort of "balanced diet" of reading

I'm of the belief that teenagers have the right to choose what they wanna read. I, myself am one and I have found many interesting books in my time and some that I want to read that I haven't yet. It's no mystery that if you're forced to do something you're more inclined in not doing it since you don't really have a choice and you rather do something else that peaks your interest; the same goes for books. If you got a choice to read a book about plants but you don't like it you rather read one that's more of your taste. Books provide useful information and rather than forcing teenagers in reading (which will make them hate it) we should just guide them where to find books they wanna check out. If we keep forcing people to read things they don't wanna they're going to associate the negative emotion to reading itself and not read anymore because of their prejudice. Reading books is becoming more and more rare these days in our modern world of fast pace and unfiltered content we shouldn't ruin the last chance to re-engage younger audiences in books.

I think that we as teenagers should have the right to read what we would like to read. I do understand that some books have more serious topics and that some people might not like a certain topic but I think we should be able to make the decision for ourselves if we want to read the book or not.

Teenagers should be able to choose what they read at school. I believe teenagers should be able to choose what they read at school as long as it's under a specific topic. Sometimes students prefer a certain topic when it comes to reading. Choosing their own book allows students to have more freedom. Having students choose their own book can make students more willing to participate in related activities.
